The California wet season officially begins on October 1st. If you manage an industrial facility or an active construction site, the time for planning has passed, and the time for final execution is here.
Over the last month, we have covered everything from emergency spill response to managing wildfire ash. Now, it all comes down to a final visual sweep of your site before the first storm hits.
Here is your consolidated, last-minute checklist to ensure you are fully prepared for the first flush.
The final construction (CGP) checklist
- Perimeter check: Walk your site and fix any flattened fiber rolls (wattles) or damaged silt fences. If they are crushed by heavy machinery, they will not protect your site.
- Inlet protection: Empty and replace any drain inlet filters that are already clogged with trash or sediment.
- Stockpile coverage: Ensure all active dirt stockpiles are covered with secured plastic sheeting.
- Paperwork readiness: Confirm your site's Risk Level and ensure your Rain Event Action Plans (REAPs) are updated and ready to deploy for Risk Level 2 and 3 projects.
The final industrial (IGP) checklist
- Sampling kits: Verify you have your certified sample bottles, field pH testing supplies, and Chain of Custody forms fully stocked and ready for the first Qualifying Storm Event.
- Spill response: Ensure your industrial spill kits are fully stocked with absorbents and stationed near high-risk areas.
- Housekeeping sweep: Check for leaking hydraulic fluid under parked equipment and ensure your dumpsters are covered. Simple housekeeping failures are the easiest way to trigger a regulatory fine.
